(August 2026) Nebraska – As children across Nebraska return to classrooms this fall, parents are preparing for a new school year filled with
homework, activities and new friendships. For many children in foster care, however, the transition back to school can bring added uncertainty and stress.

According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, 4,559 children are in foster care across the state of Nebraska.

TFI Family Services (TFI) encourages parents and caregivers to consider the following tips when discussing foster care with their children as they return to school:

1. Help Children Understand That Every Family Looks Different: The return to school often includes discussions about families, traditions and home life. Remind children that every family has a unique story and that families can be formed in many different ways, including through foster care.

2. Focus on Belonging Rather Than Differences: Children in foster care may already feel different because of changes in schools, homes or routines. Encourage children to focus on finding common interests, shared experiences and opportunities to include others rather than highlighting differences.

3. Talk about Kindness in Everyday Moments: Supporting a classmate does not require grand gestures. Inviting a new student to join a game at recess, saving a seat at lunch or simply introducing themselves can help create a sense of connection.

4. Prepare Children for Sensitive Conversations: Students may hear classmates talk about foster care, family separation or difficult life experiences. Teaching children to listen respectfully and avoid asking personal questions can help create a supportive environment.

5. Remind Children That Everyone Has a Story: Children may not always know the challenges their classmates are facing. Encourage empathy and understanding by reminding them that kindness matters because everyone’s circumstances are different.

By working together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed
academically and emotionally during the school year and beyond. Together, we can make
a positive difference in their lives and help them thrive.
